All-in-One Coverage for Builders Who Are Ready to Grow

Calrisk Insurance Center provides full-service construction insurance services across Southern California—built specifically for contractors who are expanding, bidding bigger jobs, and outgrowing their current agent.

As your business grows, your risks evolve. And California doesn’t make it simple. Licensed contractors are required to carry General Liability, Workers’ Comp, and often more, just to operate legally. Add in bid requirements, client contracts, and equipment investments—and the risk picture becomes complex fast.

That’s where we come in. We’re a full-service construction insurance agency that helps you get all the coverage you need—without the guesswork, runaround, or risk gaps.

We cover your risks, so you can focus on building.

FAQs About Construction Insurance in California

  • What types of insurance does a construction company need in California?

At a minimum, licensed contractors in California typically need General Liability and Workers’ Compensation coverage. But depending on your trade, size, and contract requirements, you might also need Commercial Auto, Surety Bonds, Builder’s Risk, Tools & Equipment, Professional Liability, or Umbrella coverage. Our team can help you determine what’s required and what’s smart based on your business risk.

  • Is General Liability insurance required for contractors?

Yes—California requires General Liability coverage to get and maintain your contractor license. It’s especially critical for C-39 roofing contractors. But even when not mandated, it’s considered essential protection against jobsite injury claims, property damage, and lawsuits from third parties. Learn more about General Liability coverage.

  • What’s the difference between Builder’s Risk and General Liability?

General Liability protects you if your work causes damage or injury to someone else. Builder’s Risk covers property under construction—from theft and fire to storm damage. For example, if a half-finished remodel catches fire, Builder’s Risk could cover the loss. These policies complement each other, not replace each other. Learn more on our Builder’s Risk page.

  • Do I need Workers’ Comp if I’m a sole proprietor?

Not always, but be careful. If you have employees, Workers’ Comp is mandatory. If you’re a sole proprietor with no employees, you may be exempt—but many general contractors still require subs to carry coverage or show a valid exemption. Roofing contractors (C-39) must carry workers’ comp regardless. We can walk you through your options, including Ghost policies if you need a certificate without payroll.

  • What if my subcontractor doesn’t have insurance?

If your subcontractor isn’t insured, it can come back on you. General contractors often get charged extra at audit if they use uninsured subs, and you could also be liable for injuries. We recommend verifying COIs for every subcontractor and making it part of your risk management process.

  • Can I bundle all my construction insurance with one agency?

Absolutely—that’s what we specialize in. Getting all your policies through one independent agency like Calrisk helps avoid gaps in coverage, simplifies renewals, and gives you a single point of contact for certificates, audits, and claims. Learn more about how we streamline full-service coverage.
